WEST49 Canadian Skateboard Open 2003

This year was the second year for the WEST 49 skateboard contest and was sanctioned as a World Cup contest. This means more pros and big name skaters showed up to skate the street course, which was a flawless layout and had great flow.

The crowds were stoked and cheered with real appreciation of what was being attempted and landed. The most notable Canadians skaters in attendance included Andrew Gordon, Mike Hastie, Gailea, Grant Patterson, Eric Mercier, Nathan Lacoste, Corey Sheppard, Bryan Wherry, Jason Corbett, Alex Rothbauer, Paul Machnau, Josh Evin, Dustin Montie and Dan Bochart keeping the Americans skaters (Mike Carrol, Tosh Townend, Chris Dobstaff, Colt Cannon, Dayne Brummet, Greg Lutzka, Chad Fernadez, Pat Channita, Caine Gayle, Chet Thomas, Ronnie Creager among others) to prove their abilities in the chase for
$50,000.

The women’s contest was a big draw this year along with the vert skaters, of which the PLG walked away with yet another win. The footage speaks wonders for the setup and the great time had by all that weekend. Hopefully this will continue for years to come and we can watch it grow to be as entertaining and much anticipated as the likes of Slam City Jam...
